This series contains the registers of vessels at the Key West Quarantine and Maritime Sanitation Station from 1885 to 1898. Upon the formation of the State Board of Health in 1889, the state took over control of the quarantine stations in an effort to establish a consistent approach to the quarantine practice. Maritime quarantine was a major public health activity in the early years of the Board.

Article XV of the 1885 Constitution provided for the creation of the State Board of Health, but the Board was not created until the 1889 special session of the Legislature (1889, Ch. 3839, Laws). The session was called by Governor Francis Fleming when yellow fever reached epidemic proportions. The Board was given powers to investigate and prevent yellow fever, smallpox, and cholera.
